Our very own Peter “Danish Pete” Honoré has been graced with a signature version of Victory’s best-selling V40 ‘The Duchess’ amp head – the DP40! Pete demos plenty of products on the Andertons TV channel, but more often than not – he’s plugged into his trusty Victory V40. The DP40 therefore retains many of the V40’s features and specs, but is emblazoned with Pete’s signature purple colour scheme and features a tweaked reverb circuit that suits Pete’s specific ambient tastes.
Ergonomic Design
The Victory DP40 follows Victory’s lightweight Compact Series chassis design, making this lunchbox-style head incredibly portable for gigs. Its size is deceiving though, as this EL34-driven head has plenty of power at its disposal, with up to 42W of headroom available.
If that seems like too much for the home though, you can power down to a more modest 7W. This lets you enjoy that super-sweet preamp break-up without annoying the neighbours! This function is also useful in a studio scenario, especially if sensitive mics are employed to capture the amp’s sound.
Responsive Clean & Crunch Tones
With just a single channel, the Victory DP40 may seem quite limited to some players. However, its no-nonsense design makes it the perfect amp for plug-in-and-play guitarists that prefer simplicity, with clean and crunch sounds the DP40’s speciality.
Crank the volume control beyond halfway, and you’ll attain those Honoré-esque overdrive sounds that are perfect for bluesy leads. But if you want to keep thing crystal-clean, simply turn the volume down and raise the master volume knob – to get more output from the power amp stage without encountering as much break-up.
Voicing & Mid Kick Switches
Despite its single channel, the DP40 is far from one-dimensional. With a dedicated voicing switch on its front panel, you can change the overall response and feel of the amplifier. One of these voicings has a warm ’60s-style American character, while the other has more a ’50s-esque bark to it – akin to most British amps. There’s also a ‘Mid Kick’ function that, as its name suggests, delivers a rich dose of punchy mid-range.
Perfect Pedal Platform
The DP40 is ideal as a pedal platform, which is a quality that Danish Pete particularly loves about the V40. Set up your preferred base tone via the amp and simply colour it with pedals that can enrich its sound; much like Honoré does with his own overdrive and compressor stompboxes. To ensure that time-based delay and reverb pedals work harmoniously, the DP40 also boasts an effects loop that enables clean pedal operation between its preamp and power amp stages.
Studio-Quality Reverb
Victory’s DP40 is designed to take pedals well, but its built-in, studio-quality reverb is definitely worthy of note. Slightly different to the V40’s reverb, the effect in the DP40 is tweaked to have a longer decay with a pinch of extra brightness – perfect for embellishing clean tones.
